What is Pupil Premium Funding and who is eligible?
Every school receives some funding for children who are entitled to free school meals, children in care and for families in the armed forces. Any child who has been entitled to free school meals at any point during the last 6 years is still entitled to the funding.
The money must be used to help each child eligible for the funding, and any other children identified as vulnerable, to meet or exceed the expected level for their age group across the curriculum. This is to ensure that any gap in attainment or progress is closed between children eligible for Pupil Premium and those not eligible.
“It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium, allocated to schools…. is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.” (Source – DfE website)
The funding is therefore given to schools to spend as they think best, although there is a requirement to publish online how this money is spent. For more details on Pupil Premium please visit: http://www.education.gov.uk/schools/pupilsupport/premium.
Every child in Reception and KS1 is entitled to a free hot meal at lunchtimes. However, registering your child for free school meals will enable the school to gain extra funding to support your child’s learning and experience of school. If you think your child is eligible for free school meals, please contact one of our school offices. Some parents may feel uncomfortable with being recognised as “low income” and may have concerns about their child being identified as eligible for “pupil premium”. Let me reassure you that all staff treat any information about income as confidential and children are unaware of the funding themselves.
Across our federation we want every child to have an equal opportunity to all events, activities and learning opportunities, regardless of their home income. We believe all children have the right to meet or exceed the expectations for their age and will do everything possible to ensure that this happens.
